Happy Together

Wong Kar-wai · 1997

Happy Together (1997) follows two Hong Kong men whose turbulent relationship fractures during a trip to Argentina. Directed by Wong Kar-wai and shot by Christopher Doyle, it uses saturated, grainy imagery, South American music, and elliptical structure to explore memory, displacement, and the quiet aftermath of love. Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung anchor the film with restrained, physically precise performances. It is less a story about reconciliation than about learning to live alongside absence.

Mahjong

Edward Yang · 1996

Edward Yang’s 1996 Mahjong is a Taipei-set ensemble comedy about a drifting youth gang, a French woman searching for an interior designer, and a soothsayer whose predictions come true only because others act on them. Conducted almost entirely in English, it treats crime, romance, and superstition as interchangeable social scripts — less a satire of greed than a demonstration of how greed, once ambient, ceases to be legible as motive.

2046

Wong Kar-wai · 2004

Wong Kar-wai’s 2004 romantic drama follows writer Chow Mo-wan as he drifts through 1960s Hong Kong, entangled with several women while haunted by an unconsummated past. Structured non-chronologically and interwoven with sci-fi fragments, it uses repetition, texture and sound to explore memory, longing and emotional stasis — not as narrative problems to solve, but as perceptual conditions to inhabit.

A Brighter Summer Day

Edward Yang · 1991

Edward Yang’s 1991 epic follows a Taipei teenager’s slow drift into violence against the backdrop of 1950s–60s Taiwan: a society shaped by the 1949 Nationalist retreat, political suspicion, and the hollow echo of American pop culture. At 237 minutes, it unfolds with patient, unsentimental precision — observing family life, school routines, gang rituals and state surveillance not as separate domains but as layers of the same suffocating reality. Chang Chen stars in his debut as Si’r, a boy whose fatal act feels less like choice than conclusion.

Red Cliff

John Woo · 2008

John Woo’s 2008–09 two-part epic Red Cliff adapts the Battle of Red Cliffs with deliberate historical latitude, prioritising psychological texture and tactical realism over strict fidelity. Shot across reservoirs and studios in China, it follows the fragile Sun–Liu alliance against Cao Cao’s imperial army, using wide compositions, restrained performances, and weather-driven strategy to ground myth in physical reality. The full 288-minute version demands—and rewards—attention to rhythm, gesture, and consequence.

The Assassin

Hou Hsiao-Hsien · 2015

Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s 2015 wuxia film, set in the Tang dynasty, follows an assassin ordered to kill her cousin and former betrothed. Loosely based on a ninth-century story, it replaces genre conventions with austere composition, elliptical storytelling and profound stillness. Shot by Mark Lee Ping Bin and scored by Lim Giong, it won the Golden Horse Award for Best Feature Film and Best Director at Cannes.
