The Wailing

Na Hong-jin · 2016

Na Hong-jin’s 2016 Korean mystery-horror follows a rural policeman investigating inexplicable violence in his village. As explanations multiply — shamanic curse, demonic possession, epidemic, colonial panic — none cohere, and conviction becomes indistinguishable from delusion. With deliberate pacing, restrained performances, and Hong Kyung-pyo’s naturalistic cinematography, the film sustains dread through ambiguity rather than revelation. Its power lies in how thoroughly it models the exhaustion and danger of not knowing — and how easily certainty replaces it.

The Boy and the Heron

Hayao Miyazaki · 2023

After his mother dies in wartime Japan, Mahito Maki moves to the countryside, follows a talking grey heron into an abandoned tower, and enters a fantastical realm governed by its own private logic. Hayao Miyazaki spent roughly seven years making the film, released in Japan with no trailers, stills or synopsis beyond a single poster.

The Wind Rises

Hayao Miyazaki · 2013

A fictionalised account of aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi, who dreamed of flight but could only design the machines rather than pilot them himself. Hayao Miyazaki's 2013 film pairs a delicate romance with the uncomfortable fact of what Horikoshi's designs became.
