Bad Timing

Nicolas Roeg · 1980

Nicolas Roeg’s 1980 psychological thriller Bad Timing follows an inspector’s investigation into a woman’s suicide attempt, using non-linear editing and restrained cinematography to dissect the obsessive, destructive relationship between a psychoanalyst and his lover. Set in Vienna and shot by Anthony B. Richmond, it stars Art Garfunkel and Theresa Russell, with Harvey Keitel as the investigator. Adapted by Yale Udoff from an Italian story, the film was controversial on release — rejected by its UK distributor and X-rated in the US — yet won the Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award. Its formal rigour and emotional austerity have secured its status as an arthouse landmark.

A Room with a View

James Ivory · 1986

James Ivory’s 1986 adaptation of E. M. Forster’s novel follows Lucy Honeychurch’s awakening to desire and selfhood amid the rigid codes of Edwardian England and Italy. Starring Helena Bonham Carter and Julian Sands, it is a restrained, visually precise romance that trusts subtlety over exposition and behaviour over backstory.

The Sound Barrier

David Lean · 1952

David Lean’s 1952 aviation drama follows a British aircraft magnate, his daughter, and two test pilots as they confront the physical and human limits of early jet flight. Written by Terence Rattigan and shot by Jack Hildyard, it balances procedural realism with restrained emotion, using sound, silence, and composition to convey the weight of progress. Though historically imprecise and structurally austere, its power lies in its unwavering focus on consequence over spectacle.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Steven Spielberg · 1981

Steven Spielberg's 1981 adventure sends archaeologist Indiana Jones after the Ark of the Covenant, racing Nazi treasure hunters across three continents. Financed by Lucasfilm rather than a studio, built from a George Lucas story and a Lawrence Kasdan script, it swept the technical Academy Awards and became the year's biggest earner despite tracking that predicted it would be overshadowed.

Watership Down

Martin Rosen, John Hubley · 1978

A small group of rabbits flees their doomed warren on a premonition of disaster and treks across the English countryside to found a new one, clashing along the way with the totalitarian warren of Efrafa under General Woundwort. Martin Rosen took over direction from John Hubley partway through production, financed the film through a British consortium, and released it in 1978 to an audience unsure what age it was made for.
