The South
Set in northern Spain in the late 1950s, Víctor Erice’s The South traces a young girl’s quiet, persistent attempt to understand her father’s hidden past — his childhood in the south, his Republican past, his estrangement from his family, and his enduring attachment to an actress named Irene Ríos. Adapted from Adelaida García Morales’ novella and shot by José Luis Alcaine Escaño, the film proceeds through restrained, image-led episodes, treating memory as physical trace and silence as narrative agent. It was produced by Elías Querejeta and entered the 1983 Cannes Film Festival.
