Putney Swope
Putney Swope (1969), written and directed by Robert Downey Sr., follows Arnold Johnson as Putney Swope, the sole Black board member who accidentally becomes head of an ad agency. Renaming it Truth and Soul, Inc., he fires the white staff, bans harmful clients, and commissions surreal, colour-saturated commercials — all while being voiced by Downey himself. The film’s low-budget aesthetic, jagged editing, and deadpan absurdity target advertising, corporate liberalism, and racial tokenism. Though uneven in pacing and reliant on period-specific references, its structural rigour and thematic persistence earned it preservation in the US National Film Registry.
