King Kong

Peter Jackson · 2005

Peter Jackson’s 2005 King Kong is a 187-minute expansion of the 1933 original, set in 1933 and starring Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Andy Serkis as Kong. It balances spectacle with emotional precision, grounding its giant gorilla in behavioural realism and its human drama in period texture. Though criticised for length and uneven character development, it succeeds in making Kong feel alive, vulnerable and irreplaceable — a feat of performance, sound design and sustained vision.

Planet of the Apes

Tim Burton · 2001

Tim Burton’s 2001 Planet of the Apes is a visually rich, commercially successful remake that prioritises creature design, production scale, and tonal consistency over narrative coherence or thematic depth. Starring Mark Wahlberg and Helena Bonham Carter, it recasts the ape-dominated world as a tactile, myth-saturated empire — impressive in execution, thin in conception. Critics noted its craft and score but faulted its script and ending. It earned $362 million worldwide but was not followed by a sequel.
