Okja

Bong Joon-ho · 2017

A teenage girl in the South Korean mountains raises Okja, a genetically modified 'super pig'. When the Mirando Corporation claims Okja as winner of its global breeding contest, Mija follows her to New York, aided by the Animal Liberation Front. What unfolds is a tonally restless adventure that maps the infrastructure of industrial meat — from farm to lab to slaughterhouse — while holding fast to the physical, emotional reality of one human-animal bond.

Memories of Murder

Bong Joon-ho · 2003

Bong Joon-ho's 2003 film follows two mismatched detectives investigating a string of rapes and murders in a small South Korean town in the late 1980s, one relying on coerced confessions and superstition, the other on procedure imported from Seoul that proves no more effective. Loosely based on Korea's real, then-unsolved hunt for a serial killer later identified in 2019 as Lee Choon-jae, and shot on a $2.8 million budget with Song Kang-ho in the lead, the film built a cult following before becoming regarded internationally as one of the finest crime films of the century.

Parasite

Bong Joon-ho · 2019

Bong Joon-ho's 2019 film follows the Kim family, unemployed and living in a semi-basement flat, as they scheme their way one by one into staff jobs inside a wealthy household run by the oblivious Park family, until a discovery beneath the Parks' house upends both families' arrangements. Built from a stage idea Bong developed after his own experience tutoring a rich family's son, and shot on a purpose-built house designed around the Parks' fictional architect, the film became the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture after also winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
