Shot at Pinewood with exteriors at Sherborne School, the film relies on Michael Redgrave’s contained performance, Desmond Dickinson’s muted cinematography and Arnold Bax’s sparse score to trace the slow, dignified unravelling of a man who has spent his life translating others’ emotions, never his own.
