Nicolas Winding Refn · 2011
Ryan Gosling plays an unnamed Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a wheelman, drawn toward his neighbour Irene and her young son right as her ex-convict husband's debts pull them all into a heist that goes wrong. Adapted by Hossein Amini from James Sallis's nonlinear novel and directed by Refn after Gosling handpicked him, the film pairs a stripped-down, near-silent lead performance with Cliff Martinez's synth score and long stretches where almost nothing is said out loud.
