Secret Sunshine
Lee Chang-dong’s 2007 drama follows Shin-ae, a widow who moves to her late husband’s hometown with her young son, only to endure his abduction and murder. As she cycles through denial, faith, rage and self-harm, the film refuses catharsis or symbolism, anchoring itself instead in Jeon Do-yeon’s restrained, physically precise performance and a world rendered in muted, unvarnished detail. Shot in Miryang, South Korea, it treats trauma not as narrative engine but as lived, untranslatable condition.
