Two Monks
Juan Bustillo Oro · 1934
Two Monks (1934) is a Mexican expressionist drama set in a Gothic monastery, where two monks — one dying, one newly arrived — confront a shared past through contradictory flashbacks. Directed by Juan Bustillo Oro and shot by Agustín Jiménez, it uses stark black-and-white cinematography and claustrophobic production design to explore memory, guilt, and the impossibility of objective truth. Its structural innovation — presenting two mutually exclusive accounts of a fatal love triangle — predates Rashomon by sixteen years. Though austere and demanding, it remains a landmark of early Latin American modernist cinema.
