F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film is an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula, recast as a German Expressionist study in dread. Max Schreck plays Count Orlok, a rodent-like vampire whose arrival in the port town of Wisburg brings plague and paralysis. Shot across northern Germany and Slovakia, with sets and costumes designed by occultist Albin Grau, the film builds horror through composition, texture and pacing — not dialogue or psychology. Though its human drama is thin and its intertitles often compromised by translation, its visual logic remains uncompromising and deeply influential.
