The Trial

Orson Welles · 1962

Orson Welles’s 1962 *The Trial*, filmed in France with Anthony Perkins and Jeanne Moreau, reworks Kafka’s novel into a stark, spatially disorienting vision of systemic power. Shot in abandoned stations and exposition halls, it uses scale, sound and silence to evoke procedural dread — not as metaphor but as lived atmosphere. Its enduring force lies in its refusal of explanation, catharsis or comfort.
