Ulrich Mühe plays Stasi Captain Gerd Wiesler, assigned to bug the apartment of a celebrated East German playwright in 1984 whose real offence is that a government minister covets his girlfriend. As Wiesler listens in, he begins quietly protecting the couple from the surveillance he was sent to conduct, an act of conscience that Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's 2006 debut treats as fiction the director openly acknowledges the real Stasi never produced.
