Dance, Girl, Dance

Dorothy Arzner · 1940

Dorothy Arzner’s 1940 RKO drama follows two dancers — a ballerina and a burlesque performer — navigating patronage, poverty, and prejudice in Depression-era America. Structured around contrasting performance worlds, it foregrounds labour over glamour, material constraint over romantic fantasy, and direct address over emotional exposition. Though commercially unsuccessful on release, its formal rigour and ethical clarity have secured its place as a landmark of early feminist cinema.

Metropolis

Fritz Lang · 1927

Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent science-fiction film Metropolis stages class division as vertical geography — elites above, workers below — using expressionist design, pioneering special effects, and gruelling physical production. Its moral is stated plainly: 'The Mediator Between the Head and the Hands Must Be the Heart.' Though criticised then and since for schematic politics and narrative naivety, its formal authority, spatial imagination, and material intensity make it foundational. The 2010 restoration recovers nearly all of Lang’s original cut.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Robert Wiene · 1920

A 1920 German silent film directed by Robert Wiene, written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer, and designed by Hermann Warm, Walter Reimann and Walter Röhrig. It tells of a hypnotist and his somnambulist through a fractured frame story, using radically distorted sets, high-contrast lighting and stylised performance to argue against irrational authority. Made at Babelsberg Studio, it remains foundational to expressionist cinema, horror and arthouse film.
