Lilo & Stitch

Chris Sanders, Dean DeBlois · 2002

Lilo & Stitch follows an orphaned Hawaiian girl who adopts what she thinks is a stray dog, not realizing he's an escaped, genetically engineered weapon being hunted across the galaxy. Directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, the film cost $80 million, grossed $273 million worldwide, and won an Annie Award, building its story around the Hawaiian concept of extended family rather than a generic redemption arc.

The Iron Giant

Brad Bird · 1999

The Iron Giant drops a fifty-foot alien robot into small-town Maine in 1957 and lets a lonely boy's friendship with it, rather than its destructive potential, carry the film. Brad Bird's feature debut, made by Warner Bros. on roughly half the budget and schedule of comparable animated films, was a box-office failure on release but has since become a byword for a cult classic.

Wolfwalkers

Tomm Moore, Ross Stewart · 2020

Robyn, an English hunter's daughter in occupied Ireland, is sent to help exterminate the last wolf pack outside Kilkenny and instead befriends Mebh, a girl from a wolf-linked tribe whose spirit runs as a wolf by night, discovering along the way that a bite has made her one of them too. Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart's Cartoon Saloon feature, the third in Moore's Irish folklore trilogy, builds its visual design and its politics from the same conflict, an authoritarian Lord Protector's rule against nature versus everything the forest represents.
