A Bittersweet Life

Kim Ji-woon · 2005

Kim Ji-woon’s 2005 neo-noir follows Sun-woo, a high-ranking enforcer whose life unravels after he spares his boss’s mistress — not out of compassion, but from a failure of nerve. Shot with controlled austerity by Kim Ji-yong and scored with sparse, metallic textures by Dalpalan, the film charts Sun-woo’s descent not into chaos but into increasing clarity: that his obedience has hollowed him out, and his revenge is merely the final act of a man who has nothing left to lose. Lee Byung-hun anchors it with a performance built on restraint, not revelation.

Memories of Murder

Bong Joon-ho · 2003

Bong Joon-ho's 2003 film follows two mismatched detectives investigating a string of rapes and murders in a small South Korean town in the late 1980s, one relying on coerced confessions and superstition, the other on procedure imported from Seoul that proves no more effective. Loosely based on Korea's real, then-unsolved hunt for a serial killer later identified in 2019 as Lee Choon-jae, and shot on a $2.8 million budget with Song Kang-ho in the lead, the film built a cult following before becoming regarded internationally as one of the finest crime films of the century.
