A teenage girl returns home from a mental institution to her father’s secluded country house, where her younger sister and new stepmother await. As tensions mount and strange events unfold, the line between haunting and hallucination blurs — until the film reveals that the horror resides not in the house, but in the mind’s desperate, self-preserving fictions.
Bong Joon-ho's 2019 film follows the Kim family, unemployed and living in a semi-basement flat, as they scheme their way one by one into staff jobs inside a wealthy household run by the oblivious Park family, until a discovery beneath the Parks' house upends both families' arrangements. Built from a stage idea Bong developed after his own experience tutoring a rich family's son, and shot on a purpose-built house designed around the Parks' fictional architect, the film became the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture after also winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
