Medicine for Melancholy
Barry Jenkins · 2008
Barry Jenkins’ 2008 debut follows Micah and Jo, two Black San Franciscans, over one day of conversation, wandering, and quiet confrontation. Shot in desaturated tones by James Laxton and edited by Nat Sanders, it uses minimal narrative scaffolding to explore identity, gentrification, and the unspoken tensions of interracial dating and cultural assimilation in a city where Black residents make up just seven percent of the population.
