The Prince of Tides
Barbra Streisand’s 1991 adaptation of Pat Conroy’s novel follows South Carolina teacher Tom Wingo (Nick Nolte) as he travels to New York to help his suicidal twin sister, guided by psychiatrist Susan Lowenstein (Streisand). Through therapy sessions and flashbacks, buried family trauma surfaces — violence, repression, and the long shadow of the Lowcountry. Though the film foregrounds romance over the novel’s sibling-centred depth, its power lies in restrained performances, Stephen Goldblatt’s naturalistic cinematography, and its unwavering focus on how silence shapes identity.
