The Holy Mountain
Alejandro Jodorowsky · 1973
Alejandro Jodorowsky's 1973 film, financed by Beatles manager Allen Klein with production money from John Lennon and Yoko Ono, follows a Christlike thief who becomes an alchemist's apprentice and joins seven wealthy, corrupt figures, each embodying a planet, on a journey to seize immortality from beings said to rule from a sacred mountain's summit. Shot sequentially in Mexico on a $750,000 budget after its cast spent three months in spiritual training under Oscar Ichazo, the film became a fixture of New York's midnight-movie circuit, running for sixteen months at the Waverly Theatre after its Cannes premiere.
