True Stories
David Byrne · 1986
David Byrne’s 1986 musical film True Stories unfolds in the fictional town of Virgil, Texas, as a nameless visitor observes residents preparing for a sesquicentennial ‘Celebration of Specialness’. Built from vignettes rather than plot, it features John Goodman, Spalding Gray, Swoosie Kurtz and others performing stylised, sincere portraits of small-town life, scored largely by Talking Heads. Edward Lachman’s flat, frontal cinematography and Byrne’s deliberate pacing create a tone both surreal and tender — less mockery than meticulous documentation of how people build meaning from thin air.
