Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 House is a Japanese comedy horror film about seven schoolgirls devoured one by one in a sentient, surreal country house. Made with handmade effects, a rock soundtrack by Godiego, and non-professional actors, it rejects narrative logic in favour of associative, childlike imagery rooted in Obayashi’s daughter’s fears and his own Hiroshima memories. Though dismissed on release, it has since gained cult status for its audacious form and emotional precision.
