Disney first considered adapting Lewis Carroll's books in the early 1930s and spent nearly two decades discarding drafts — a live-action hybrid with Mary Pickford, a literal script judged too grotesque, a version written by Aldous Huxley — before settling on the fully animated, more comic take released in 1951 to a muted box office and mixed reviews that only later warmed.
