Alice in Wonderland

Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske · 1951

A bored young girl follows a white rabbit down a hole into a nonsensical kingdom ruled by a short-tempered Queen of Hearts, encountering a parade of self-absorbed creatures along the way. Disney first considered adapting Lewis Carroll's books in the early 1930s and spent nearly two decades discarding drafts — a live-action hybrid with Mary Pickford, a literal script judged too grotesque, a version written by Aldous Huxley — before settling on the fully animated, more comic take released in 1951 to a muted box office and mixed reviews that only later warmed.

One Hundred and One Dalmatians

Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, Wolfgang Reitherman · 1961

Two London Dalmatians, Pongo and Perdita, cross the country to rescue their kidnapped puppies from the fur-obsessed socialite Cruella de Vil, picking up 84 more stolen Dalmatians along the way. Adapted from Dodie Smith's novel by Bill Peet, the only writer credited on the finished script, the film used a new Xerox transfer process to keep costs down after Sleeping Beauty's expensive failure had studio executives openly discussing whether animation was worth continuing at all — and the film's box-office success settled that question decisively.

The Jungle Book

Wolfgang Reitherman · 1967

Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, is walked toward the safety of a human village by the panther Bagheera and the bear Baloo while the tiger Shere Khan hunts him. Story artist Bill Peet developed an early, darker treatment closer to Rudyard Kipling's original stories before Walt Disney rejected it as unsuited to a family audience, replacing Peet with a new writing team who leaned into comedy and music instead. It became the last animated feature Disney oversaw personally before his death partway through production.
