The Emperor Jones
Dudley Murphy · 1933
Dudley Murphy’s 1933 adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s play stars Paul Robeson as Brutus Jones, a charismatic Black man whose self-made empire on a Caribbean island collapses under guilt, fear and colonial myth. Made independently in New York with a Black-led creative core, it attempts avant-garde cinematic translation — using music, rhythm and stylised performance — but is hampered by Hays Office censorship, budget limits and narrative additions. Though structurally uneven, Robeson’s performance and the film’s formal ambition secure its place as a culturally significant, aesthetically urgent work.
