Man Bites Dog
Rémy Belvaux, Benoît Poelvoorde, André Bonzel · 1992
Man Bites Dog (1992) is a Belgian black-and-white mockumentary in which filmmakers follow a charismatic serial killer, recording his crimes and monologues. Directed, written and performed by Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel and Benoît Poelvoorde, it uses fly-on-the-wall conventions to trace the crew’s descent from observers to accomplices. Shot on 16 mm with no score, it refuses catharsis or explanation, instead exposing how documentary aesthetics naturalise atrocity. It won the Sitges Best Feature award and faced bans in multiple countries for its unflinching depiction of sexual and physical violence.
